Andrew Bartholomew Chaplin) : Honourable members of the committee, I see a quorum. [ English ] We can now proceed to the election of a chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(2). The chair must be a member of the government party. I am ready to receive motions for the post of chair. Madam Charlton. Ms. Chris Charlton (Hamilton Mountain, NDP) : I nominate David Sweet. That's Hamilton solidarity. The Clerk : It has been moved by Madam Charlton that David Sweet be elected chair of the committee. Are there any further motions? (Motion agreed to) The Clerk : Before inviting Mr.

Sweet to take the chair, if the committee wishes, we may now proceed to the election of vice-chairs. Hon. Judy Sgro (York West, Lib.) : I nominate Chris Charlton. The Clerk : The first vice-chair must be a member of the official opposition. Are there any further motions? It has been moved by Ms. Sgro that Chris Charlton be elected as first vice-chair of the committee. (Motion agreed to) The Clerk : Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the second vice-chair must be a member of the opposition party other than the official opposition. I am now prepared to receive a motion for the second vice-chair. Hon.

Mike Lake (Edmonton—Mill Woods—Beaumont, CPC) : I move Judy Sgro— Mr. David Sweet (Ancaster—Dundas—Flamborough—Westdale, CPC) : Due to the complexity, I didn't have a chance to weigh in on that. The Clerk : It has been moved by Mr. Lake that Judy Sgro be elected as second vice-chair of the committee. (Motion agreed to) The Clerk: Mr. Sweet.

(1535) The Chair (Mr. David Sweet (Ancaster—Dundas—Flamborough—Westdale, CPC)) : Thank you very much, colleagues. I appreciate the trust and confidence. That was a very slim victory, Madam Sgro. I'm just amazed that you slipped by on that one. Hon. Judy Sgro : I know I was going to have some real competition. The Chair : Without any unanimous consent for anything else, that's the end of our business. We'll have our first business meeting next week. The meeting is adjourned.
