The Chair (Mrs. Sherry Romanado (Longueuil—Charles-LeMoyne, Lib.)) :
Welcome to meeting number 47 of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. We're meeting today at the request of four members of the committee to discuss the request with regard to completion of the committee's study of Bill C-253 . With that, I just wanted to make a proposal. I think we all want to see this bill finished, so if it's the will of the committee, I'd like to propose that we start exactly where we left off, on the CPC amendment, so we can get this done today. I don't know about you, but I would like this thing finished.
If it's okay with everyone—if it's the will of the committee—can we start right away where we left off? I'm seeing agreement. Okay, great. We were on the CPC amendment. If anyone has any questions on it, please raise your hand and I will recognize you. Go ahead, MP Jaczek.
Ms. Helena Jaczek (Markham—Stouffville, Lib.) :
Thank you, Madam Chair. I just have a point of clarification in terms of some remarks Monsieur Lemire made on Tuesday. It may have just been a translation issue. I made it very clear that I was not questioning Mr. Schaan's credibility. In fact, I said that very clearly. What I wanted to hear from Mr. Schaan was what consultations the government had actually engaged in and what other organizations might be in support of opposition, in essence, to this particular bill. He responded by giving a number of organizations' names, etc. I think Monsieur Lemire somehow misinterpreted that in fact I was questioning Mr. Schaan's credibility. I just wanted to clarify that I definitely was not.
The Chair :
Thank you so much, MP Jaczek. Thank you for clarifying if there was an
interpretation issue. [ Translation ] Mr. Lemire, your hand is up.
Mr. Sébastien Lemire (Abitibi—Témiscamingue, BQ) :
I'm taking note of this. If I may, I'll take the time to go over the translation issues. I think that we have excellent translations. I'll look at what happened. I'm taking note of this. I apologize for any confusion.
The Chair :
Thank you. [ English ] Does anyone have any comments or questions regarding the amendment? I'm not seeing any hands, so I will turn it to the clerk for recorded division. Shall the amendment carry? (Amendment agreed to: yeas 11; nays 0 [ See Minutes of Proceedings ])
The Chair :
We are now finished the clause-by-clause consideration. We just have a few remaining things to vote on. Essentially, it's the administrative part of the bill. I will turn to the clerk for the next one. I'm not sure if we require a recorded division for this.
An hon. member : Yes.
The Chair: Shall the title of the bill carry? (Title agreed to: yeas 11; nays 0)
The Chair: Shall the bill as amended carry? (Bill C-253 as amended agreed to: yeas 11; nays 0)
The Chair: Shall the chair report the bill as amended to the House? (Reporting of bill to the House agreed to: yeas 11; nays 0)
The Chair: Shall the committee order a reprint of the bill as amended for the use of the House at report stage? (Reprint of the bill agreed to: yeas 11; nays 0)
The Chair: With that, folks, we've finished our first bill. (1110) [ Translation ] Congratulations, Ms. Gill. [ English ] We've moved the witnesses we were supposed to have today to next Tuesday, so we are good, folks. I think this is the first time that we will actually be able to have lunch today on our own. I want to thank everyone. Thank you so much for your assistance in this. We're delighted to—
Hon. Pierre Poilievre (Carleton, CPC) :
I have a point of order.
The Chair :
Yes. Mr. Poilievre.
Hon. Pierre Poilievre :
What is for lunch? I was just wondering what you catered for us today.
Some hon. members: Oh, oh!
The Chair :
I promise you one thing. Next time we're all back in person, I'll bring some smoked meat from Montreal. How's that?
Hon. Pierre Poilievre :
The good stuff.
The Chair :
The good stuff.
Mr. Scott Duvall (Hamilton Mountain, NDP) :
Thank you very much, Chair. You did a great job.
