CCG Response to a Question Raised at the October Meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Veterans Affairs (SECD) Question: 1. Senator Deacon asked CCG about recruitment strategies including challenges, such as staffing in remote locations/communities. Response: The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is developing a range of plans and strategies to attract and recruit the employees it needs now and for the future. This includes national recruitment initiatives and advertising campaigns that are targeting high priority positions across our organization.
Our first action in this strategy is the national fleet recruitment campaign All Hands on Deck - Application Form (hiringplatform.ca). The objective of this recruitment campaign is to create a talent-at-the-ready staffing option for CCG-Fleet hiring managers while increasing internal representation to be more representative of the Canadian population, including Indigenous peoples, visible minorities, and people with disabilities. Therefore, priority for appointment through this process will be given to candidates who have self-declared as belonging to an Employment Equity (EE) or EE-seeking group.
In addition, this long-term recruitment strategy is aimed at reaching individuals living in a range of communities rural, remote, and urban which historically have had little to no exposure to the Coast Guard. Increasing our workforce awareness on specific aspects of our labour market will produce a more agile, innovative and capable recruitment strategy in future years. The Canadian Coast Guard will use data-driven evidence to better inform its talent attraction and recruitment activities.
