Senate Committees
November 18, 2024 Good day, I live in Langley, BC and have recently retired. I have lived in BC all my life and have always listened to CBC Radio 1. I have understood that CBC programming has had to change over the years resulting in repeat scheduling of shows over a week, and programming focussed on possibly younger audiences. I have found some of this re-visioning frustrating but I continue to support CBC Radio because I think it is critical in keeping Canada connected.
I rely on CBC radio to provide me with thoughtful content about what’s going on in BC but more importantly, for me, what is going on in the rest of Canada. I regularly listen to the following: 1.
Locally – Early Edition and On the Coast 2. the national shows - The Current and As It Happens and Cross Country Check Up 3. comedy shows - The Debaters 4. politically focussed shows – The House The content in these shows is relevant and current, but more importantly, is hosted by people who I trust (trust that they understand Canada but that they are also interested and engaged with the people they bring in or the topics they’re sharing). But I do stop listening to CBC radio when the content becomes too entertainment industry focussed – so these days, Q and Commotion.
The value of CBC radio to me is that since I have always lived, worked and been educated in BC, I am surrounded by a very BC-centric, English-speaking perspective. So I rely on CBC radio to keep me connected to the rest of Canada. Therefore, I would request that any future for CBC Radio programming, continues to provide long-format interview shows that explore current events, provides call-in shows moderated by skilled hosts (e.g. Ian Hanomansing) and provides content- specialty shows where the hosts have credibility in their fields (e.g. The House). Thanks, Louise Smith Langley, BC
