Senate Committees

November 19, 2024 To: The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications I understand that the Committee is seeking comments from Canadians regarding our views on how CBC, as a public broadcaster, can do better in the changing world of media. To put it mildly, I am a regular CBC radio listener, CBC Listen app user, CBC Gems app user, and CBC Youtube channel user. I am a first generation Canadian from India, although I was quite young when we moved to Canada in the mid- 1960's, so I only have known Canada. My parents often listened to CBC radio and watched CBC on TV.

I cannot emphasize how important it was to have CBC in our lives to help us understand and quickly grow to love Canada. My wife and I have passed on this love of CBC to our two children (both now adults). I believe CBC is more important to Canada's future than it ever has been, and I support looking at how its role can be strengthened in this changing media world. I believe CBC programming in all its forms from radio to TV and its extension to its related apps, is the connective tissue for cross-Canada fabric that holds us together.

This is especially true for recent (and not-so-recent) immigrants, as well as for Canadians with multi-generational histories in Canada. Although I think CBC does a very good job at what it does, I believe there may be opportunities to improve its appeal to recent immigrants and help them develop their love and understanding of Canada and its values.

This may mean more effort at communicating with these ethnic cultural groups directly so they are aware of how the CBC addresses their stories and will help other Canadians understand their culture, and help members of the specific ethnic cultural groups understand other Canadian cultures and general Canadian values. In addition to the above, I think there may also be an opportunity for the CRTC to push more CBC and Canadian content in Youtube (as video suggestions). I am not sure how easy this would be, or even if it's already been done, but I thought it should be mentioned.

I hope to see CBC's role and impact strengthened for all Canadians to help enhance all Canadian's understanding, love and commitment to making Canada a better place for all. Sincerely, Barry Azevedo Langley BC
