THE COMMITTEE OF SELECTION

EVIDENCE

OTTAWA, Monday, May 9, 2022

The Committee of Selection met with videoconference this day at 8:30 a.m. [ET] to make recommendations on issues relating to the scheduling of committee meetings, the coordination, facilitation and enhancement of hybrid meetings, and the duration of membership on committees; and, in camera, for consideration of a draft agenda (future business).

The Chair: Good morning, honourable senators. I can’t think of a better way to start Monday morning than with a meeting of the Selection Committee, so it is great to see everybody here.

This is a public meeting of the Committee of Selection. Before we begin, I want to quickly report back to the committee that the steering committee received an office allocation request last week from Senator Audette. She has requested to move to office suite 214 East Block. She is currently in Room 131 East Block, which is in close proximity to the East Block construction. The offices in 214 East Block are vacant and have been returned to the pool. As per the further decision taken since the last meeting, the steering committee has approved the request, and I am reporting our decision to the full committee.

With that, I turn to the first item on our agenda, which is the election of a new deputy chair. Senator Saint-Germain, I understand that you intend to move a motion to that effect, so I will turn the floor over to you.

Senator Saint-Germain: Good morning, and you are right. This is a very good morning to begin this new sunny week, with this committee.

Honourable senators, I have the intention to leave the deputy chair of the Selection Committee, given all the responsibilities that I have, and given the fact that Senator Chantal Petitclerc has responsibilities that are aligned with the mandate of Selection. So I move the motion that:

The Honourable Senator Chantal Petitclerc be elected Deputy Chair of the Selection Committee.

The Chair: Thank you, senator. The Honourable Senator Saint-Germain has moved that the Honourable Senator Petitclerc be deputy chair of the committee. Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion? Agreed. I declare the motion carried and I invite Senator Petitclerc to take the deputy chair position.

[ Translation ]

Senator Petitclerc: I just wanted to thank you and say that it is a pleasure and a privilege to take on this new responsibility. I look forward to getting to know my colleagues and to putting my efforts, time and energy into the work of this committee. Thank you very much.

The Chair: We are pleased to have you with us, and we all look forward to working with you.

I would like to mention that with Senator Mercer’s retirement last week, Senator Bellemare has joined this committee as a representative of the PSG. I would therefore remind committee members that the steering committee is now composed of the chair and deputy chair and the two other members designated after the usual consultations, who are Senator Downe from the CSG and now Senator Bellemare as well.

We are ready to begin the in camera portion of today’s meeting.
