Senate Committees
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen and as a survivor of the Danforth shooting. I would like to express my strong support for Bill C-21, which is currently under consideration in the Senate. The Danforth shooting thrust me into a nightmare that no one should ever have to endure. The haunting sound of gunfire, the ensuing chaos, and the senseless loss of innocent lives have left indelible marks in my memory. In the aftermath, I grappled with a whirlwind of emotions: survivor's guilt, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression.
My family, too, has endured immense suffering, their lives forever changed by the trauma we collectively experienced. Gun violence doesn't only inflict physical wounds; it infiltrates our minds, leaving scars that often go unnoticed by the world. Surviving a shooting exacts a profound toll on mental health. Flashbacks, nightmares, and hyper-vigilance become an integral part of our daily existence, while anxiety and depression tighten their grip on us. The mental health repercussions for survivors and their families cannot be underestimated. We must acknowledge and address this hidden epidemic.
Bill C-21 represents a significant step forward in enhancing gun control and public safety in Canada. I firmly believe that the measures proposed in this bill are crucial in preventing future tragedies like the one I experienced and in making our communities safer. The expanded provisions, such as the prospective definition of prohibited assault-style firearms and regulations against ghost guns, are essential in ensuring that dangerous weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.
I also acknowledge that this bill is not aimed at removing existing handguns from lawful owners but rather at eliminating the addition of new handguns to private ownership or the market. It strikes a balance between respecting the rights of existing owners and safeguarding the public from further risks. However, I want to emphasize the importance of considering the issue of handgun ownership. Handguns, particularly when in private ownership, pose significant risks to public safety. They have been a contributing factor in countless homicides and cases of intimate partner violence.
We witnessed this just weeks ago in Ontario, where handguns played a devastating role in a tragic incident. While I respect the sport of shooting as a hobby, I believe that no recreational activity should take precedence over human life and the safety of our communities. Handguns have been the cause of significant harm, and their accessibility and potential for misuse outweigh any argument for their private ownership. It is crucial that, as we consider Bill C-21, we prioritize the well-being and security of the public over the interests of a small group of hobbyists.
The safety of our communities and the prevention of further tragedies should be at the forefront of our decisions regarding gun control legislation. Storage of Handguns and Stolen Firearms: In addition to the issues related to handgun ownership, it is essential to consider the secure storage of firearms. The prevalence of stolen handguns from homes and stores is a grave concern. The ease with which firearms can be stolen and fall into the wrong hands is a significant public safety risk. It is imperative that we address this issue as well, as it directly impacts the safety of our communities.
In conclusion, I want to thank you for your dedicated service to our great nation and for your consideration of the deeply impactful issue of gun violence. Your attention to this matter is highly valued, and I look forward to hearing about your stance on Bill C-21, including your consideration of the concerns related to handgun ownership, their contribution to homicides and intimate partner violence, the urgent need for secure firearm storage, and the acknowledgment of the bill's intent. If you have any questions or need further information from me, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely, Ali Demircan Founding Member of Danforth Families for Safe Communities
