Senate Committees

20 Centrepark Dr., Gloucester, ON K1B 3C1 May 9, 2023 Mr. Vincent Labrosse Clerk Senate Committee on Transport and Communications The Senate of Canada Ottawa, Ontario Dear Mr. Labrosse, I am forwarding a short document that presents, in what we believe is a clear and succinct manner, the small change we believe is required in the wording of Bill C-18. We were successful in having Indigenous storytelling included in the wording of this legislation with the support of most of the parties in the House. However, some wording in an amendment was not what we had proposed.

Our goal with this process is to ensure that small Indigenous news organizations and news services can share these stories with all Canadians in the full spirit of reconciliation and understanding. The added wording restricts support of the Indigenous news entities that could be supported by the funding to the Indigenous communities only and we would propose that the wording creating that restriction be removed. For ease of reference, we have attached the definition wording that is at issue, one with the current wording and one with the amended wording.

We will be speaking more fully on this matter when we appear before the Committee on June 7. We would greatly appreciate if this document and its French translation was distributed to the Committee Members ahead of our appearance. We greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter. Sincerely, Jean La Rose Monika Ille President/CEO President/CEO Dadan Sivunivut Inc. APTN
