Study of Bill C-11,
An Act to Amend the Broadcasting Act and to Make Related and Consequential Amendments to Other Acts Aircraft Pictures is proud to be a Canadian production company. Since 2005, we have created high quality, scripted content for kids, families, and young adults in Canada and around the world.
Some of our recent projects include the Emmy-nominated Hulu Original series, Holly Hobbie; the family sci-fi adventure Circuit Breakers for AppleTV+; the Academy Award nominated animated feature film, The Breadwinner; three television movies based on the Bruno & Boots book series by Canadian young adult fiction icon Gordon Korman; the supernatural comedy series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil; and the Kidscreen Award-winning single-camera comedy Raising Expectations. Like many other members of Canada’s creative community, we support Bill C-11.
Modernizing the Broadcasting Act is important to the future of Canada’s production sector. It will require foreign streaming services that make billions from Canadian subscribers to invest in Canadian productions. And it will help put Canadian companies and creators on a more competitive footing by empowering them to maintain intellectual property over their own content (see section 10(1.1)).
Encouragingly, the Bill also emphasizes contributions from the entire Canadian production sector, including both independent Canadian production companies and production companies affiliated with Canadian broadcasters (see section 3(1)(i)(v)). By doing so, it would help ensure the Broadcasting Act supports all Canadian productions in the future. This is especially meaningful for Aircraft because our longstanding broadcasting partner, Corus Entertainment, recently invested in our company.
After collaborating on the Bruno & Boots movies, the two organizations saw an opportunity to build something unique together and we set out to deepen our relationship. Aircraft is confident this new investment will help us build more scale, find new synergies, and expand into new markets and genres. 147 Liberty Street, Toronto, Ontario M6K 3G3 T 416.536.9179 | www.aircraftpictures.com Collaborations between Canadian media organizations like Aircraft and Corus allow them to support more Canadian talent and export more Canadian programs than either could alone.
In this way, they strengthen the creative ecosystem in Canada. Bill C-11 wisely recognizes this and would encourage more such partnerships going forward. We thank Honourable Senators for the opportunity to share our views and urge them to pass Bill C-11 without delay. Sincerely, Anthony Leo Co-President
