Senate Committees

From: Blayne Robson <blayne.robson@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, June 3, 2024 22:52 To: TRCM <TRCM@SEN.PARL.GC.CA> Cc: Deacon, Marty <Marty.Deacon@sen.parl.gc.ca>; Fragiskatos, Peter - M.P. :HoC <peter.fragiskatos@parl.gc.ca> Subject: Bill S-269,

An Act respecting a national framework on advertising for sports betting. [***EXTERNE/EXTERNAL***] To whom it may concern, Thank you for considering this bill. I have reached out to Senator Deacon before to express my gratitude, and would happily lend my thoughts of looking for opinions in the community. I am now a Director for a Not For Profit hockey program; we have hundreds of families who would I could coordinate discussions with if asked. On a personal note I would like to express the following: I am not the morality police. In fact I support legalized gambling.

What I do not support is propagating dangerous behavior in programming accessible to children. We do not allow smoking or drinking in children's program, and historically leveraged the CRTC to ensure a code of conduct was observed and enforced on programs that were considered child friendly. I understand that the gambling industry is a billion (if not trillion) dollar industry. So is alcohol. So was tobacco. We go through great lengths to ensure children are not considering these options. Why then would we not do the same for gambling. My ask is simple: programming must not include references to gambling.

These references would include in game segments, live odds updates, etc. Further: while it would be my preference that no gambling commercials are broadcast during primetime sports; a fair compromise may be that said advertisements should not include celebrities. I don't want to tell my son how great Wayne Gretzky is, only to have Wayne telling him to go to Bet365. If there is any way to support this bill, please let me know.
