An Act to amend the International Boundary Waters Treaty Act and the International River Improvements Act (Transboundary Waters Protection Act), in the House of Commons and it was given first reading.
Bill C-26 amends the International Boundary Waters Treaty Act to prohibit the bulk removal of transboundary waters. Some
definitions and exceptions that are currently found in regulations are transferred to Bill C-26. The Act gives the federal government powers of inspection and enforcement and introduces penalties for violations, including monetary fines. The enactment also provides for measures to administer and enforce the Act. Lastly, it also makes a consequential amendment to the International River Improvements Act.
