OIC Text: The Governor in Council on the report and recommendation of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice dated February 28, 2019, and pursuant to Sections 3 and 4 of
Chapter 252 of the Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1989, the Legal Aid Act , is pleased to: (
a) appoint George Ash of Halifax Regional Municipality (Dartmouth) as Chair of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission for the remainder of his term commencing March 30, 2019; (
b) determine that the remuneration of George Ash shall be at the rate of $150 for each day of meetings of the Commission or a committee of it, to a maximum of $600 for each fiscal year, during the period he serves only as a part-time director, and $300.00 for each day of meetings of the Commission or a committee of it during the period he serves as a part-time director and Chair, and be reimbursed for reasonable expenses incurred in fulfilling his duties as Chair, provided that any such reimbursement does not exceed that normally paid to members of the civil service; (
c) appoint Jennifer Reid of Halifax Regional Municipality (Shad Bay) Chris Boyd, of Antigonish, Antigonish County, and Oliver Janson, of Digby, Digby County, as part-time directors of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission, each for a term of three years commencing March 19, 2019; (
d) determine that the remuneration of Jennifer Reid, Chris Boyd, and Oliver Janson shall be in the amount of $150.00 for each day of meetings of the Commission or a committee of the Commission, to a maximum of $600 for each fiscal year, and reimbursement for reasonable expenses incurred in fulfilling their duties as part-time directors of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission, provided that any such reimbursement does not exceed that normally payable to members of the civil service; and (
e) order that the Province shall defend, negotiate or settle claims or charges made against George Ash, Jennifer Reid, Chris Boyd and Oliver Janson and indemnify them from personal liability, provided that the Province is satisfied that the claim arises out of their activities in relation to their appointments and is not based on fraud or criminal activity, and where the Province so defends them, the Province will be in control of the case.
