An Act to designate a week of recognition for the Women’s Institute The Women’s Institute (WI) has been an important force in the rural community across Ontario ever since the first branch was formed in Stoney Creek in 1897. WI initiatives and action have produced many social improve- ments. Today the need for WI’s contribution to practical education and community better- ment is greater than ever. February is a significant month in WI his- tory.

In that month, the first branch was formed, Adelaide Hoodless (WI’s founder) was born and died, the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario was organized to co- ordinate the work of the branches and the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada was organized to work at the national level. It is desirable to recognize and acknowledge WI’s real and continuing contribution to improving the lives of families and communi- ties both in Ontario and throughout the world. Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows: 1.

The week beginning on the second Monday in February in each year is pro- claimed as Women’s Institute Week. 2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent. 3. The

short title of this Act is the Women’s Institute Week Act, 1998. Projet de loi Loi désignant une semaine de reconnaissance à l’égard du Women’s Institute L’institut appelé Women’s Institute (WI) a joué un rôle important dans les collectivités rurales de l’Ontario, et ce depuis la création de son premier bureau à Stoney Creek en 1897. Les initiatives ainsi que les mesures prises par l’institut ont permis de nombreuses améliora- tions dans le domaine social.

L’institut doit participer encore plus activement à l’améliora- tion de l’éducation pratique et des activités au niveau communautaire et ce besoin est aujourd’hui plus grand que jamais. Février est un mois important dans l’histoire de l’institut. C’est en effet en février que son premier bureau a été créé, qu’Adelaide Hood- less (la fondatrice de l’institut) est née et qu’elle est décédée, que l’organisme appelé Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario a été organisé de façon à coordonner le travail de ses divers bureaux.

C’est également en février que la Fédération des instituts féminins du Canada a commencé d’exercer ses activités au niveau national. Il est souhaitable de reconnaître et de saluer la contribution constante et réelle de l’institut à l’amélioration de la vie des familles et des collectivités à la fois en Ontario et dans le monde. Pour ces motifs, Sa Majesté, sur l’avis et avec le consentement de l’Assemblée législative de la province de l’Ontario, édicte : 1. La semaine commençant le deuxième lundi de février de chaque année est procla- mée Semaine du Women’s Institute. 2.

La présente loi entre en vigueur le jour où elle reçoit la sanction royale. 3. Le

titre abrégé de la présente loi est Loi de sur la Semaine du Women’s Institute. Préambule Semaine du Women’s Institute Entrée en vigueur
