BILL 223 PROJET DE LOI 223 THE JON SIGURDSSON DAY ACT

WHEREAS Jon Sigurdsson was an Icelandic scholar and statesman who led the 19th century struggle for Icelandic self-government; AND

WHEREAS Jon Sigurdsson's birthday, June 17, was chosen as Iceland's national holiday when Icela nd announced its autonomy from Denmark in 1944; AND

WHEREAS a statue of Jon Sigurdsson, which stands on the northeast corner of the grounds of th e Manitoba Legislative Building, was presented by the people of Iceland in June 1921 in honour of the Icelandic settlers who were among the first to establish a community in Manitoba; Attendu : que Jon Sigurdsson, érudit et homme d'État islandais, a mené au XIX e siècle la lutte qui a permis à l'Islande d'accéder à l'autonomie; que son anniversaire de naissance, soit le 17 juin, a été déclaré fête nationale de l'Islande le jour où ce pays a proclamé son indépendance du Danemark en 1944; qu'une statue de Jon Sigurdsson, érigée à l'angle nord-est des terrains du Palais législatif, a été offerte en juin 1921 par le peuple de l'Islande pour rendre hommage aux colons islandais qui ont été parmi les premiers à s'établir au Manitoba, THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba , enacts as follows: SA MAJESTÉ, sur l'avis et avec le consentement de l'Assemblée législative du Manitoba, édicte : Jon Sigurdsson Day 1 June 17 in each year is proclaimed as Jon Sigurdsson Day.
