C ao BILL 214 1997 HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AMENDMENT ACT, 1997 (A ssented to , 1997) HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, enacts as follows: A m ends R S A 1980 cH -7 1 The H ighw ay Traffic A ct is amended by this Act. 2 The following is added after

section 65: A ir bags 65.1(1) In this section, "air bag" means a device or assembly that (

a) is installed on the dashboard of a motor vehicle, (

b) is equipped with a control mechanism that senses sudden deceleration of the motor vehicle, which when activated ignites a chemical propellant that produces gas and inflates a bag, and (

c) is intended to supplement the protection provided by a seat belt assembly.

(2) No person shall, on a highway, operate a motor vehicle in which a passenger who is under the age of 12 years occupies the right front passenger seat for which an air bag is provided unless the air bag has first been deactivated by a cut-off switch. 1

(3) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations (

a) exempting persons or motor vehicles from the operation of this section; (

b) respecting circumstances or conditions under which a person or a motor vehicle may be exempted form the operation of this section. C om ing into force 3 This Act comes into force on Proclamation. 2
