EXPLANATORY NOTE NOTE EXPLICATIVE This Bill proclaims August 1 of each year as Emancipation Day. En vertu du présent projet de loi, le 1er août est proclamé « Jour de l'émancipation ».

BILL 232 PROJET DE LOI 232 THE EMANCIPATION DAY ACT

LOI SUR LE JOUR DE L'ÉMANCIPATION (Assented to ) (Date de sanction : )

WHEREAS the British Parliament abolished slavery in the British Empire as of August 1, 1834; AND

WHEREAS slavery existed in British North America prior to its abolition in 1834; AND

WHEREAS abolitionists and others who struggled against slavery, including those who arrived in Upper and Lower Canada by the Underground Railroad, have historically celebrated August 1 as Emancipation Day; AND

WHEREAS it is important to recognize the heritage of Manitoba's people of African descent and the contributions that the Black community have made and continue to make to Manitoba; Attendu : que le Parlement britannique a aboli l'esclavage dans l'Empire britannique le 1er août 1834; que l'esclavage existait en Amérique du Nord britannique avant son abolition en 1834; que les abolitionnistes et les autres personnes qui ont lutté contre l'esclavage, y compris ceux qui sont arrivés au Bas-Canada et au Haut-Canada par le chemin de fer clandestin, célèbrent depuis longtemps le 1er août comme étant le Jour de l'émancipation; qu'il est important de reconnaître le patrimoine des Manitobains d'ascendance africaine et la contribution que la communauté noire a apportée et continue d'apporter au Manitoba, THEREFORE HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, enacts as follows: SA MAJESTÉ, sur l'avis et avec le consentement de l'Assemblée législative du Manitoba, édicte : Emancipation Day 1 In each year, August 1 is to be known throughout Manitoba as Emancipation Day.
