Named for Raymond Murray "R. M." Patterson (1898-1984), an explorer of and

writer about Western Canada. He served in the First World War as an artillery officer,

was captured in 1918 and spent eight months as a prisoner of war. In 1924, Patterson

migrated to Canada where he homesteaded near Fort Vermilion. In 1927, he

undertook a series of explorations of the little known South Nahanni River. In 1929,

he sold his farm and relocated to the Cochrane area, eventually acquiring a ranch near

the Highwood River. From this ranch he worked as a guide and an outfitter and

undertook a number of explorations of what is now Kananaskis Country. In 1946,

Patterson sold the ranch and moved to Vancouver Island. His explorations became the

subject for his books, such as Dangerous River (1954), Buffalo Head (1961), Far

Pastures (1963), Trail to the Interior (1966) and Finlay's River (1968), and magazine

articles, principally for The Beaver and Blackwood's.

Notice of Adjustment to the Minor Injury Amount

(Insurance Act)

Pursuant to the Minor Injury Regulation, the maximum amount awarded for minor

injuries is adjusted to $4,641 and is applicable to minor injuries caused in motor

vehicle accidents occurring in Alberta, on or after January 1, 2012.

The following appendix sets out the method of calculating the adjustment to the

minor injury amount.

APPENDIX

The maximum amount recoverable as damages for non-pecuniary losses for all minor

injuries sustained by a claimant as a result of an accident occurring during the 2012

calendar year is $4,641.

This amount is based on the annual change in the Alberta Consumer Price Index

(CPI), and calculated using the following formulas:

(

a) The annual change in the Alberta CPI was calculated to one-tenth of a percentage

point using the formula X = (A-B) / B where:

X is the annual change in the Alberta CPI;

A is the sum of the 12 individual monthly CPI indexes for the 12 month period

ending on September 30, 2011; and

B is the sum of the 12 individual monthly CPI indexes for the 12 month period

ending on September 30, 2010;

(

b) The result in (

a) is multiplied by the 2011 minor injury amount and rounded to

the nearest whole dollar to derive the increase in the minor injury amount for

2012; and

(

c) The increase in (

b) is added to the 2011 minor injury amount and rounded to the

nearest whole dollar to establish the 2012 minor injury amount.

percentage point, is 0.01817 or 1.8 per cent. The increase in the minor injury amount

for 2012 is 1.8 per cent of the 2011 minor injury amount of $4,559 rounded to the

nearest whole dollar, or $82. Accordingly, the 2012 minor injury amount is set at

$4,641.
