AN ACT TO AMEND THE PROVINCIAL GENERAL HOSPITALS ACT (Assented to 1978) HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly· of· Alberta, enacts as follows: 1. The Provincial General Hospitals Act is amended by this Act. 2.

Section is amended (

a) by repealing subseCtion (1 ) ,and substituting the follow ing:

(1) For each hospital there shall be a Board of Man agement consisting of nine members who shall be resi dents of the municipality in which the hospital is located, and shall be elected otherwise in the same manner as and subject to the same disqualifications Jl:S co:up.cillo.rs of a municipality elected pursuant to The·· MuniCipal Elections Act; (

b) by repealing subsection (1.1); and (

c) by repealing subsection (3). 3.

Section is repealed and the following is substituted: 8. The Board shall proceed at its first meeting to appoint one of its members to be Chairman. 4. This Act comes into force on a date to be fixed by Proclamation. Explanatory Notes I. This Bill will amend

chapter of the Revised Statutes of Alberta, 1970. 2.

Section presently reads: 7.

(1) For each hospital there shall be a board of management consisting of not more than nine members who shall be appointed by the Miniister.

(1.1) Where the Minister appoints a member under subsection (1), he shall prescribe the term of office of that member.

(1.2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), where a hospital is affiliated with the faculty of medicine of a university under The Universities Act, the Minister may by order direct that, in addition to the members appointed under subsection (1), the following persons are also members of the board: (

a) the president of that university, or, in his absence, a vice-president of the university designated by the president, and (

b) the dean of the faculty of medicine of that university, or, in his absence, an assistant dean of that faculty designated by the dean.

(2) Where a hospital services utilization committee is established for a hospital by the by-laws of the board, the Minister may also appoint one of the members of the medical staff of the hospital, other than an employee of the board, as a member of the board and in that case (

a) the board shall consist of the members appointed under subsection (1) and the member appointed under this subsection, and (

b) the member so appointed holds office during the pleasure of the Minister but ceases to hold office in any event if he ceases to be a member of the medical staff of the hospital. -

(3) Upon the removal of a member or upon the creation of a vacancy in a board by resignation or death, the Minister may appoint the member to fill the vancancy. Provides that hospital Board members be elected. 3.
