Bill 201 Mr. D. Anderson BILL 201 1979 THE ALBERTA FAMILY INSTITUTE ACT (Assented to , 1979) HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, enacts as follows: 1. There is hereby established the Alberta Family Institute. 2.

(1) The Institute shall be under the direction of a Board which shall consist of not more than 7 trustees appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, of whom one shall be chairman.

(2) The chairman shall be nominated by the Lieutenant Gover nor in Council and shall be a member of the Legislative Assembly. 3.

(1) The chairman of the Board shall receive such remunera tion and reimbursement of expenses as is authorized by the Lieu tenant Governor in Council, providing that money has been appro priated to that purpose by the Legislature.

(2) The members of the Board shall receive such reimbursement of expenses as is authorized by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, provided that money has been appropriated to that purpose by the Legislature. 4. The objects of the Institute are (

a) to carry out research, to fund the carrying out of research by others and to co-ordinate research into matters affect ing the family unit, including (

i) changes in the structure of the family unit; (ii) the effect of community growth and change on the family unit; (iii) the effect of changing family structure on the econo mic and social environment of the Province; (iv) the impact of change in the family unit on family members;

(

b) to make such recommendations as it sees fit on the basis of research carried out by it and by other organizations to the Minister of Social Services and Community Health and to such other ministers whose responsibilities appear to the Board to be related to the results of the research. 5.

(1) The Institute shall carry out or cause to be carried out research requested of it by the Minister of Social Services and Community Health.

(2) The Institute may, at the initiative of the Board, carry out or cause to be carried out such research related to its objects as the Board considers appropriate. 6.

(1) There is hereby established a fund to be known as the Alberta Family Institute Fund, into which shall be paid (

a) such money as is appropriated to the Fund by the Legisla ture, (

b) any donations received by the Institute.

(2) The Board shall be responsible for the management of and accounting for the Fund in accordance with

section 8.

(3) The Auditor General shall be the auditor of the Fund. 7. The Board may hire staff, purchase or lease equipment and contract for research and services that it considers necessary to carry out the objects of the Institute, which shall be paid for out of the Fund. 8.

(1) The Board shall, after each fiscal year, prepare an an nual report of its operations for that year, including a financial statement of the Fund, and on completion shall submit it to the Minister of Social Services and Community Health.

(2) On receiving the report, the Minister of Social Services and Community Health shall lay it before the Legislative Assembly at the earliest opportunity if it is then sitting, and if it is not then sitting within 15 days of the commencement of the next sitting. 9. This Act comes into force on the day upon which it is assen ted to. 2
