An Act to Establish a Hospital Visitors Committee (Assented to , 1970) HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows: 1. This Act may be cited as The Hospital Visitors Com mittee Act. 2. In this Act, (a) "Minister" means the Minister of Health; (b) "Committee" means the Alberta Hospitals Visitors Committee established under

section 3; (c) "member" means a member of the Committee; (d) "hospital" means a hospital, institution or other facility, or any part thereof, designated by the Lieutenant Governor in Council as a hospital for the purpose of administration of The Mental Health . Act and The Alberta Hospitals Act. 3. There is hereby established a committee with the name of the Alberta Hospital Visitors Committee consisting of members appointed pursuant to

section 6. 4. The objects of the committee are: (

a) the attainment and maintenance of the highest degree of health in the Province; (

b) to ensure that available personnel and facilities are being utilized to their maximum efficiency; (

c) to ensure that the resources of the hospitals under the purview of the Department of Health are being used effectively in planning, implementation of programs, operations coordination of all health pro grams. 5. The Committee shall visit and review the operation of all hospitals and submit a report to the Minister, for tabling in the Legislature on their findings as to: (

a) the care, treatment, rehabilitation and general atti tudes of patients and general attitudes of staff;

b) planning, programs and coordination of programs for the prevention of disease and the care, treat ment and rehabilitation of patients. 6. The Lieutenant Governor in Council shall appoint 12 members to the Committee selected or designated as fol lows: (

a) the Deputy Minister of Hospital Services of the Department of Health or such person as he may designate to act on his behalf; (

b) the Director of Health Units of the Department of Health or such person as he may designate to act on his behalf; (

c) the Director of Mental Health of the Department of Health or such person as he may designate to act on his behalf; (

d) the Director of Nursing Education of the Depart ment of Health or such person as she may designate to act on her behalf; (e) (f) (g) (

h) one member to be selected by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association; one member to be selected by the Alberta Associ ation of lV[unicipal Districts and Counties; two members of the Legislative Assembly of the political party forming the Government of the Prov- ince of Alberta, as designated by the Premier; two members of the Legislative Assembly of the Official Opposition, as designated by the Leader of the Opposition; (i)' the Dean of the Faculty 'Of Medicine of The Uni versity of Calgary or such person as he may desig nate to act on his behalf; (

j) the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of The Uni versity of Alberta or such person as he may desig nate to act on his behalf. 7.

(1) Within 90 days after the day this Act has been assented to, the members of the Committee shall meet to organize and elect one of the members Chairman and one member Vice-Chairman.

(2) The Committee may hold meetings and conduct such visits and reviews of operations so as to carry out the obj ec tives and duties contained in this Act. 8. Order-in-Council 2114/66 is repealed. 9. This Act comes into force on the day upon which it is assented to. 2
