218 Wednesday, November 16th, 2016 The House met at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon pursuant to adjournment. The Member for Lewisporte – Twillin gate (Mr. Bennett) made a Statement to recognize Mr. Norman Austin who has been awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. The Member for Fogo Island – Cape Freel s (Mr. Bragg) made a Statement to recognize and celebrate the efforts of the communities of Dover and Lumsden which held their first Remembrance Day services this year. The Member for Conception Bay East – Bell Island (Mr. Brazil) made a Statement to congratulate the Portugal Cove – St.

Ph ilips Lions Club which has celebrated its th anniversary. The Member for Placentia West – Bell evue (Mr. Browne) made a Statement to recognize Harry Cooze for his contribution to his community as a volunteer. The Member for Virginia Waters – Pleasantville (Mr. Bernard Davis) made a Statement to congratulat e Mrs. Rita Symonds who has celebrated her th birthday and to recognize the recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze level award. The Member for Topsail – Paradise (Mr. Paul Davis) made a Statement to congratulate the Town of Para dise and the St.

John’s Regi onal Fire Service on the opening of the new fire station in Paradise. The Honourable the Minister of Servic e NL (Mr. Joyce) made a Statement to recognize today as the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims. The Honourable the Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods (Mr. Crocker) made a Statement to inform t he House about the Provincial Government’s participation in the China Fisheries and Seafood Expo in Qingdao. The Honourable the Government Hous e Leader (Mr.

Parsons) gave notice and by leave moved, seconded by the Honourable the Minister of Ch ildren, Seniors and Social Development (Ms. Gambin-Walsh) that the Member for Bonavista (Mr. King) be confirmed as a member of the Public Accounts Committee. The Speaker put the question on t he motion and declared the motion carried. The Member for St. John’s East – Quidi Vidi (Ms.

Michael) presented a Petition from certain residents of the Province ca lling upon the House of Assembly to urge Government to legislate an immediate in crease in the minimum wage and an annual Wednesday, November 16th, 2016 adjustment to the minimum wage, beginning in to, reflect the Consumer Price Index. The Member for Conception Bay East – Bell Island (Mr. Brazil) presented a Petition from certain residents of the Provin ce calling upon the House of Assembly to urge Government to ensure the safety of al l children by removi ng the 1.6 km busing policy where safety is a concern. The Member for St.

John’s Centre (Ms. Rogers) presented a Petition from certain residents of the Province calling upon the H ouse of Assembly to urge Government to keep libraries open and work on a long-term plan to strengthen the library system. Pursuant to order and on motion debat e commenced and concluded on the following Resolution standing in the name of the Member for Virginia Waters – Pleasantville (Mr.

Bernard Davis): “WHEREAS the upgrading and development of road infrastructure is of paramount importance to the economic future of Newfoundland and Labrador; AND WHEREAS the traditional approach to r oad construction has led to momentous traffic back-ups, delays and frustr ation for citizens, tourists and businesses alike; AND WHEREAS it can be shown that nighttime paving will significantly reduce the negative impacts of road construction through traffic slow-downs and travel delays; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Honourable House supports the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador initiative to implem ent a pilot project early in which uses nighttime paving as its primary method for completing the work.” The Speaker put the question on the Re solution and declared the Resolution carried.

The Speaker then adjourned the House until Thursday at 1:30 p.m., pursuant to Standing Order 9. Sandra Barnes, Clerk of the House of Assembly.
