EXPLANATORY NOTE NOTE EXPLICATIVE This Bill proclaims the first Monday in August of e ach year as Terry Fox Day and the second Sunday after Labour Day of each year as Terry Fox Run Day. Le présent projet de loi a pour objet d'établir la « Journée Terry Fox », qui serait observée le premier lundi d' août, et la « Journée de la course Terry Fox », qui serait obs ervée le deuxième dimanche de septembre après la fête du Travail.

WHEREAS Terry Fox, born in Manitoba on July 28, 1958, inspired a nation with his heroic ef forts; AND

WHEREAS after losing his right leg to cancer at the age of 18, Terry Fox was moved by the suffering of other cancer patients to raise awareness and money for cancer research by running across Canada; AND

WHEREAS on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in St. John's, Newfoundland an d journeyed 5,373 kilometres in 143 days, until he wa s forced by the spread of cancer to stop on September 1, 1980, just outside Thunder Bay, Ontari o; AND

WHEREAS on February 1, 1981, the Marathon of Hope fund reached $24.17 million, realizing Terry Fox's dream of raising $1 from every Canadian to fight cancer; AND

WHEREAS the year 2015 marks the 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope, and Terry Fox's legacy is still supporting and sustaining the searc h to find the cure for cancer; Attendu : que Terry Fox, né au Manitoba le 28 juillet 1958, a inspiré la nation par ses efforts héroïques; qu'après avoir subi à l'âge de 18 ans l'amputation de la jambe droite en raison d'un cancer, Terry Fox a été motivé par les souffrances d'autres patients atteints de cancer à accroître la sensibilisation à la recherche sur le cancer et à recueillir des fonds pour cette cause en traversant le Canada à la course; que le 12 avril 1980, Terry Fox a entrepris son Marathon de l'espoir à St.

WHEREAS the Terry Fox Run is held each year at thousands of sites in more than 25 countries wit h more than 2 million participants running to raise fu nds for cancer research; AND

WHEREAS, to date, more than $650 million has been raised in Terry Fox's name to support cancer research; AND

WHEREAS Terry Fox's visionary efforts also laid the groundwork for the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute; AND
