Act to proclaim Battle of the Hatpins Day

Preamble

The

Battle of the Hatpins of January 7, 1916 is an enduring symbol of Francophone

rights in Ontario. Mothers, armed with rolling pins, cast-iron pans and

hatpins, stood up and fought off enforcement officers attempting to prevent

French-language instruction at Guigues School in Ottawa. The passion for

education demonstrated by the sisters Béatrice and Diane Desloges during the

Battle of the Hatpins inspired and continues to inspire Francophones to demand

and fight for French-language education and Francophone rights in Ontario.

Therefore,

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of

the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Battle

of the Hatpins Day

January

7 in each year is proclaimed as Battle of the Hatpins Day.

Commencement

This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short

title

The

short title of this Act is the Battle of the Hatpins

Day Act, 2021 .
