Safety Amendment Act, 2009 in force:

Johnston Lake

W) On the Wandering River approximately 75 km NNW of Lac La Biche (hamlet).

The name for this water feature commemorates Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Constable Leo Johnston. Constable Johnston was one of the four RCMP officers

killed near Mayerthorpe on March 3, 2005. Residents of Lac La Biche, Johnston's

hometown, applied to have this lake named to commemorate Constable Johnston

following this tragic event. The proposal was supported by the Johnston family and

the neighbouring First Nations communities The Johnston family has operated a trap

line and maintained a cabin on this lake for more than 40 years and there is some

evidence that the lake has been known locally as Johnston Lake for some time due to

its association with the family. The lake has also been referred locally as "Otter Lake"

due to the large number of otters found in the region.
