Decisions on Geographical Names

(Historical Resources Act)

Notice is hereby given that pursuant to

Section 18, Subsection 3 of the Historical

Resources Act the following decisions on geographical names were duly authorized

on March 1, 2000.

REINSTATED

NTS Map Sheet 83 I/15 - "Grassland"

Frains

(locality)

Located in:

SE 1/4,

Sec. 35, Twp. 66, Rge. 18, West of 4th Meridian

(54ø 45' 14" N & 112ø 36' 10"

W) Approximately 41 km west of Lac La Biche.

Origin of the name is not known. A post office was established at this location in

March 1934 with Olivier Trudeau as the first postmaster. The post office closed in

April 1969. When the NTS Map Sheet for this region was updated in 1970, an

agreement was reached between the provincial and federal naming authorities to

retain the name, but change the feature type from "post office" to "locality." Despite

this agreement, the name was rescinded on April 28, 1970. In May 1970, the error

was discovered and reported, but no correction was made. The issue was raised again

in 1998, which led to the official reinstatement of the name.

Prosperity

(locality)

Located in:

NE 1/4, Sec.36, Twp. 66, Rge. 20, West of 4th Meridian

(54ø 45' 37" N & 112ø 52' 49"

W) Approximately 29 km north east of Athabasca.

The name was adopted by early homesteaders as an expression of their hopes for the

future of their new community. A post office was established in October 1930 with

Charles Gagnon as the postmaster. The post office closed in April 1969. When the

NTS Map Sheet for this region was updated in 1970, an agreement was reached

between the provincial and federal naming authorities to retain the name, but change

the feature type from "post office" to "locality." Despite this agreement, the name

was rescinded on April 28, 1970. In May 1970, the error was discovered and reported,

but no correction was made. The issue was raised again in 1998, which led to the

Spruce Valley

(locality)

Located in:

NW 1/4,

Sec. 2, Twp. 68, Rge. 19, West of 4th Meridian

(54ø 51' 48" N & 112ø 48' 5"

W) Approximately 35 km north east of Athabasca.

The name refers to the abundance of spruce trees in the area during the settlement

period. A post office was established in March 1935 with Nick Homenuik as the

postmaster. The post office closed in April 1938. It was reopened in November 1951

with Annie Kanarek as postmistress. The post office was permanently closed in April

1969. When the NTS Map Sheet for this region was updated in 1970, an agreement

was reached between the provincial and federal naming authorities to retain the name,

but change the feature type from "post office" to "locality." Despite this agreement,

the name was rescinded on April 28, 1970. In May 1970, the error was reported, but
