Notice of Intent to Designate a Provincial Historic Resource
(Historical Resources Act)

Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its
publication in Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit intends
to make an Order that the site known as the:
Fensala Hall, together with the land legally described as:
Descriptive Plan 0323284, Block 2, Lot 3A, excepting thereout all mines and
minerals
and municipally located in Red Deer County, Alberta be designated as a Provincial
Historic Resource under
section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, RSA 2000 cH-9.
The reasons for the designation are as follows: Fensala Hall, constructed in 1903, is
an excellent example of a simple "Prairie Settlement" style of recreational/assembly
type facility with a front gable housing a central main entrance. In 1920 the hall was
enlarged with a small north or rear addition that reflects the original style and design.
The historical significance of the site lies in the role that it played in facilitating the
preservation and promotion of the Icelandic culture in Alberta throughout the
twentieth century. The site is closely associated with the internationally known
Icelandic poet, Stephan G. Stephansson, and was important in keeping together the
strongly knit Icelandic community which grew up around Markerville and nearby
Hola. Fensala Hall has and continues to be a very important community centre and
regional landmark.
It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the
public interest.

Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its
publication in Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit intends
to make an Order that the site known as the:
Rowley Grain Elevator Row, together with the land legally described as:
Plan RY428, Railway and Station Grounds, in: NW 21-32-20-W4M, containing 7.94
hectares (19.61 acres) more or less, excepting thereout all mines and minerals
and municipally located in Starland County, Alberta be designated as a Provincial
Historic Resource under
section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, RSA 2000 cH-9.
The reasons for the designation are as follows: The heritage value of the Rowley
Grain Elevator Row lies in association with the dominant method of storing and
transporting grain in Alberta throughout most of the twentieth century. It is also
valued as an icon of Alberta's agricultural and social history.
The Searle Grain Company Grain Elevator site is comprised of a single elevator
structure built by the Searle Grain Company in 1932, with an office and small fuel
shed. It is an early example of the Prairie Vernacular industrial style of railroad
structure built to a "standard tall" plan with a grain storage and handling capacity of
44,000 bushels. The structure is an excellent example of crib construction and retains
a high degree of integrity with respect to its original design elements, machinery, and
material. It is the oldest known extant example of an elevator constructed by the
Searle Grain Company in Alberta.
The United Grain Growers-Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Elevator site is comprised of a
single elevator constructed by the United Grain Growers in 1920 that was twinned
when the Alberta Wheat Pool constructed a single elevator adjacent to it in 1940. The
twinned elevators are accompanied by an office building and power-house. Both
elevator structures are very good examples of the Prairie Vernancular style and were
built to a standard square plan designed by the United Grain Growers in 1917. They
retain a high degree of original integrity with some alterations made to accommodate
the twinning in 1940. The site complex is a very good example of a twinned elevator
complex that shows the materials and mechanical systems used within a two-decade
period. The United Grain Growers component is the oldest known extant example of
an elevator constructed by the United Grain Growers in Alberta.
It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the
public interest.

Historic Resource under
section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, RSA 2000 cH-9.
The reasons for the designation are as follows: The historical significance of the
Canadian Northern Station and Roundhouse at Big Valley lies in its direct association
with Alberta's great railway boom between 1909-1920. On the Alberta Midland line
of the Canadian Northern Railway, it housed the offices of a major divisional point,
conducted traffic between Drumheller and Vegreville, and oversaw operations of the
line west to Rocky Mountain House. The station is also an excellent example of
standard railway architecture and is the least altered of the four surviving stations of
this kind in Alberta.
The creation of branch lines like the Alberta Midland reflected an unprecedented
degree of provincial - rather than federal - investment in railway construction after
1909, and the energy of economic expansion in the years before World War One.
The line was intended to provide passenger service and open up lands for farming in
the period of settlement, and to tap the rich coal deposits around Drumheller. A
townsite was surveyed off the rail line in 1910, the stationhouse built in 1912, and the
roundhouse complex between 1912 -18. But the 1922 merger of Canadian Northern
Railway with Grand Trunk lines, to create the Canadian National Railway, rendered
the line redundant.
The station and site components are also significant as examples of the standard
architectural design created for the Canadian Northern Railway's western operations
by architect Ralph Benjamin Pratt. It is the only known complex of this nature
remaining in the province and constitutes a landmark for the region.
It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the
public interest.

20(1) of the Historical Resources Act, RSA 2000 cH-9, hereby:
1. Designate the site known as the:
Donalda Creamery, together with the land legally described as:
Plan 5965AE, Block 1, Lots 13 AND 14, excepting thereout all mines and
minerals
and municipally located in the Village of Donalda, Alberta
as a Provincial Historic Resource,
2. Give notice that pursuant to
section 20, subsection (9) of that Act, no person shall
destroy, disturb, alter, restore, or repair any Provincial Historic Resource or
remove any historic object from a Provincial Historic Resource without the
written approval of the Minister.
3. Further give notice that the following provisions of
section 20, subsections
(11) and (12) of that Act now apply in case of sale or inheritance of the above
mentioned resource:
(11) the owner of an historic resource that is subject to an order under
subsection (1) shall, at least 30 days before any sale or other
disposition of the historic resource, serve notice of the proposed sale
or other disposition on the Minister,
(12) when a person inherits an historic resource that is subject to an
order under subsection (1), that person shall notify the Minister of
the inheritance within 15 days after the historic resource is
transferred to the person.
