PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS (MINK FARMS) AMENDMENT ACT, 2016

This Bill amends the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to include the recommended best practices contained in the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink, as recommended by the National Farm Animal Care Council.

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

1 The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 372, is amended by adding the following section:

9.4

(1) In this section:

(a) "Act" means the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act ;

(b) "mink" means any mink raised for a commercial purpose;

(c) "mink farming" means the keeping and use of mink.

(2) The requirements and recommended best practices contained in the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink, as published and amended from time to time by the National Farm Animal Care Council, are recognized as reasonable and generally accepted practices of mink farming for the purposes of

section 24.02 (

c) of the Act.

Explanatory Note

This Bill amends the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to include the recommended best practices contained in the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farmed Mink, as recommended by the National Farm Animal Care Council.
