NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE PROVINCIAL HISTORIC RESOURCE

(Historical Resources Act)

Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this

Notice, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that

the site known as:

the Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Elevator Site Complex comprised of the 1978

single composite grain elevator, two warehouses and office building,

together with the land legally described as:

Plan 8322663, Block 9 and Block 10, excepting thereout all mines and

minerals, and municipally located at 5209-47th Street, Leduc, Alberta

be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under

section 20 of the

Historical Resources Act, R.S.A. 2000 C.H-9.

The reasons for the designation are as follows:

The Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Elevator Site Complex at Leduc is an excellent

example of a Prairie Vernacular Industrial Style of railroad structure

designed to weight, store and ship grain to domestic or international

markets. Constructed in 1978, it represents one of the last of the

semi-composite wood crib style of construction before the change to

regional concrete and steel high-speed terminals. It contains both modern

1970-grain elevator construction technologies and early grain transferring

and handling techniques. All components of the site complex are

structurally sound and retain a very high degree of their original

materials and design features.

Its historical significance lies in its structural representation of the

standard method of grain storage and marketing throughout rural Alberta

during the greater part of the 20th century. It also stands as a testament

to the ubiquity of the Alberta Wheat Pool, a farmers collective that grew

into a $billion per year marketing and farm produce distribution

enterprise. It also tells of the rich grain-growing district that surrounds

Leduc, which has served to make Leduc the largest rural service centre

between Edmonton and Wetaskiwin.

It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the

resource is in the public interest.

the North-West Travellers Building, together with the land legally

described as:

Plan C, Block 31, the south 66.4 feet of Lots 17 and 20 inclusive, and

municipally located at 515-1st Street S.E., Calgary, Alberta

be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under

section 20 of the

Historical Resources Act, R.S.A. 2000 C.H-9.

The reasons for the designation are as follows:

Completed in 1914, the North-West Travellers Building was designed by the

architects and engineers Burroughs and Richards, and was constructed by P.

Lyall & Sons. It is a very good example of later Edwardian Classicism with

its classical detailing and rich surface ornamentation that is enhanced

through the use of local brick, terra cotta and pressed metal. It is a

reinforced cast-in-place concrete structure, which is unique for a

four-storey building of this type and time frame, and is an excellent

example of commercial structures built in Alberta in the early 1900s.

The historical significance of the North-West Travellers Building lies in

its provision of structural evidence of the commercial boom that gripped

Calgary during the early years of the 20th century. It also represents the

central role played by Calgary in the commercial life of the south-central

Alberta, and the role of the travelling salesman in small town Alberta

during the first half of the 20th century. It is important in having housed

the Calgary Public Museum and the Commercial High School as well as the

Commercial Club and several provincial government offices. Its use by the

Salvation Army is also significant, and indicative of a continuing need for

social services in a late 20th century boom city recognized for its

commercial advancements.

It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the

resource is in the public interest.
