Notice of Receipt of a Repatriation Application

(Blackfoot First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects Repatriation Regulation)

Pursuant to the First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects Repatriation

Act(FNSCORA) and the Blackfoot First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects

Repatriation Regulation made under that Act, the Province of Alberta as represented

by the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit hereby gives notice of receipt of two

repatriation applications from members of the Siksika Nation for several objects in

the Government of Alberta's collections at the Glenbow Museum and the Royal

Alberta Museum.

The first application regards the repatriation request for two hoof rattles associated

with the Tobacco Dance (AF3703), Natoas necklace (AF1500), Natoas necklace

(AF1499), Natoas necklace (AF1502), Natoas necklace (AF1498), Natoas Bundle

Crow tail feathers (AF1354), necklace (AF3781), Weather Dance item (AF924),

Beaver Bundle drum (AF3798), Badger skin bag (AF4302), Gaming hoop (AF3784),

Digging stick (AF4296), Stone hammer (AF3705), Hairpiece (AF2249), and Pipe

bowl (AF 2979). These objects are housed in the Glenbow Museum and originated

with the Siksika Nation.

The second application is for the repatriation of Buffalo Hooves (unnumbered) and a

Natoas Bundle, incomplete (AF862), both from the Glenbow Museum, and a

Sundance robe (H66.181.1), Natoas Sundance materials (H66.181.6-31), two wristlets

(H65.99.3A&B), and a bison bone (H65.155.22) housed in the Royal Alberta

Museum. The robe originated with the Kainai Nation but was last held by a member

of the Siksika Nation. The other objects originated with the Siksika Nation.

Any person with interest in these objects, who either wishes to make written

representations to the Minister relating to this application or to submit an application

of their own, must do so within 30 days after publication of this notice in The Alberta

Gazette. For further information, an interested person should contact the Aboriginal

Liaison Officer at the Royal Alberta Museum, 12845-102 Avenue, and Edmonton,

Alberta T5N 0M6. The Aboriginal Liaison Officer can also be reached by telephone

Repatriation of the above objects to the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, as the

designated representative of the Siksika Nation, may proceed after the 30 day period

if the objects listed in the application are determined to meet the criteria of a sacred

ceremonial object as defined in FNSCORA, no additional applications or contrary

written representations have been made, and the Minister considers repatriation to be

appropriate.
