EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the City of Toronto Act, 1994 , which allowed the City to pass by-laws respecting traffic controls. The first amendment provides that the rate of speed signs be posted in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act ,

where the 1994 Act required that the signage be specified in the by-law. The second amendment extends the life of the 1994 Act for a further 3 years. Without this amendment, the 1994 Act would be repealed on June 23, 1996.

An Act respecting the City of Toronto

Preamble

The Corporation of the City of Toronto has applied for special legislation in respect of the matters set out in this Act.

It is appropriate to grant the application.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Section 2 of the City of Toronto Act, 1994 , being

chapter Pr16, is repealed and the following substituted:

Location of signs

2. The street or part of the street designated by a by-law passed under subsection 1 (2) shall be signed in the same manner as if the by-law had been passed under subsection 128 (2) of the Highway Traffic Act .

2. Subsection 6 (2) of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

Repeal

(2) This Act is repealed on the third anniversary of the day the City of Toronto Act (Traffic Calming), 1996 receives Royal Assent.

Commencement

3. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

4. The

short title of this Act is the City of Toronto Act (Traffic Calming), 1996 .
