through their work, in shaping the evolution of the artistic and cultural landscape in

Alberta; and

WHEREAS the Government of Alberta values the role of artists in affirming and

revitalizing relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples; and

WHEREAS the Government of Alberta values the diversity in the work of artists

who, being of all ages and backgrounds, reflect our diverse cultural mosaic; and

WHEREAS young artists, reflecting the next generation of artists in Alberta,

encourage new perspectives and inspire youth to pursue and value art; and

WHEREAS Alberta artists, through their work, play an important role in educating

and creating life-long learning opportunities; and

WHEREAS the Government of Alberta provides funding to artists and arts

organizations through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to support a healthy and

vibrant artistic sector; and

WHEREAS the Proclamation of the Month of the Artist gives Albertans the

opportunity to celebrate the contributions of artists to Alberta; and

WHEREAS the Proclamation of the Month of the Artist provides an opportunity to

increase recognition of the need for artists to be fairly compensated for the creation

and use of their artistic works;

NOW KNOW YE THAT by and with the advice and consent of Our Executive

Council of Our Province of Alberta, by virtue of the provisions of the said Act

hereinbefore referred to and of all other power and authority whatsoever in Us vested

in that behalf, We have ordered and declared and do hereby proclaim the month of

January of each year as the Month of the Artist in Alberta.

Environment and Parks

Notice of Intention to Establish Bighorn Country

(Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas,

Heritage Rangelands Act)

Alberta Environment and Parks is proposing Bighorn Country as a way to strengthen

the existing management of public lands in the western part of the North

Saskatchewan Region, from the boundary of Banff National Park eastward towards

Drayton Valley. The area includes most of Brazeau County and the current Bighorn

Backcountry management area. The goal is to ensure safe and positive outdoor

recreation and tourism experiences; protect critical headwaters and the environment;

and continue to support the opportunities this area provides to Albertans. Bighorn

Country includes expansion and/or establishment of eight parks and protected areas

and establishment and/or amendment of two Public Land Use Zones (PLUZ).

Your feedback is important to us as we continue to better understand how

conservation and recreation management in Bighorn Country will shape our social,

environmental and economic values on this multi-use landscape. This is a shared

responsibility.

As part of this proposal, it is the intention to disestablish the existing Kootenay Plains

Ecological Reserve, and designate its existing land base as a special protection zone

within the proposed David Thompson Provincial Park. These lands would be

managed through the use of a combination of legislative and policy tools with the

intent of maintaining current levels of protection for the many natural and cultural

features of this area. The current Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve is located

approximately 20 kilometres east of the Banff National Park boundary, straddling

both Highway 11 and the North Saskatchewan River.

The proposed action is subject to Cabinet approval. If approved, the effective date of

this proposed action will be 60 days or after, from the date of this notification.
