This name was adopted for this lake in 1951 to commemorate Flying Officer L.W.
Matthews, D.F.M. of Calgary. He was killed in a flying accident on January 30, 1944.
Since the 1950s, it appears that the water level had dropped and the water feature
became a marsh, leading to the rescinding of the name in 2004.

This name was adopted for this lake in 1951 to commemorate Flight Lieutenant W.
Stewart Pullar, D.F.C. of Delia, AB. On December 15, 1944, he was reported missing
and presumed dead. Since the 1950s, it appears that the water level had dropped and
the water feature became a marsh, leading to the rescinding of the name in 2004. The
lake is locally known as "Crooked Lake."

Matthews Lake (lake)

W) Approximately 20 km south-south-east of Lac La Biche (town).
This name commemorates Flying Officer Lionel W. Matthews, D.F.M. Matthews was
born in Sampsonton, Alberta. He was educated in Calgary, where he resided at the
start of the Second World War. He enlisted for service on May 5, 1941 and
successfully completed training as a pilot and was deployed overseas. He flew
missions in Europe and Africa, many of them being photographic reconnaissance
missions to obtain information vital to ground troops and operational planning. He
received the Distinguished Flying Medal for his actions on March 17, 1943. The
citation for the honour reads: "This airman has completed 31 operational sorties over
Germany, Italy and Tunisia. He has invariably pressed home his attacks with courage
and determination and has obtained many excellent photographs. On one occasion,
when taking
part in an operation over Sicily, his aircraft sustained damage and his
rear gunner received wounds which subsequently proved fatal. Sergeant Matthews
brought his damaged aircraft safely back, landing with his wounded comrade at an
aerodrome where hospital attention was available." Flying Officer Matthews was
killed in a flying accident over England on January 30, 1944. He is buried at the
Stratford-on-Avon Cemetery in Warwickshire, UK.

This name commemorates Flight Lieutenant W. Stewart Pullar, D.F.C. Pullar was
born in Delia, Alberta on February 1, 1918. In December 1940, he enlisted for service
in Calgary and completed his aircrew training. He completed one overseas tour and
was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, effective August 22, 1944. The citation
for the award reads: "Flight Lieutenant Pullar is a keen and efficient Captain whose
example of courage and resolution has been well reflected in the fine spirit of his
crew. He has attacked many heavily defended targets and his successes are an
excellent tribute to his ability and tenacity. He has set a fine example to all."
Following a short return to Canada on special leave, Pullar signed on for an additional
tour. On December 15, 1944, Pullar was a passenger on a B-17 Flying Fortress during
a mail run from French Morocco to Rockcliffe Airbase near Ottawa. The plane went
missing between the African coast and the Azores; all five crew and three passengers
were presumed dead. No bodies or wreckage were found. Pullar is memorialized on
the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial at Ottawa City Hall. The lake is also known
locally as "Mud Lake."

This name commemorates John Farley. Farley was born in Kent, England on
December 20, 1938. As a young man he joined the British Army and served for over
ten years, after which he migrated to Canada and was employed as a mechanic with
Alberta Transportation. He was an active outdoor enthusiast and became a member of
the Non-Association of Ramblers and Rhinoceros Trackers (NAARTs), a hiking club
affiliated with the Canadian Hostelling Association. This group has been described as
a "band of gentle anarchists" that "partied, then tracked the noble rhino on foot, by
bike, in canoes and kayaks and on cross-country skis across Alberta, British Columbia
and the Northwest Territories." As a guide and a member of the hiking club, Farley
led many groups to this lake during the 1970s and 1980s. John Farley passed away in
June 2003. The name gained wide-spread usage with hikers and guides in the area, as
well as officials with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. The lake is also
known locally and amongst the hiking community as "Mud Lake," "Headwaters
Lake," Nodding Onion Lake" and "Allium Lake."
