The reasons for the designation are as follows:

The McNaught Homestead dates from about 1911. Architecturally, it is an

excellent collection of early homestead structures including a log house,

frame pump house, large log and frame barn, small log barn, log chicken

coop that date to the initial settlement period of the homestead. The

development of the homestead site allowed for the addition of buildings as

they became required, including the former Appleton Log School that was

moved onto the property in the 1930s. The site planning is organic with

buildings being located in a seemingly haphazard fashion to the south and

west of the main house. The integrity of the collection of buildings is

very high.

The historical interest of the McNaught Homestead lies in its direct

association with Euphemia (Betty) McNaught, one of Alberta's most highly

recognized artists who lived there most of her life. The McNaught

homestead, and its immediate environs were featured in many of her

paintings and the former Appleton School that was moved onto the site in

the 1930s, functioned as her studio. The natural environmental features of

the homestead and surrounding property have remained unaltered over the

years and contribute greatly to the integrity of the site. Historically,

the McNaught Homestead is also associated with the Christian Association

and is one of the most complete collections of buildings dating from 1910

to 1914, the first settlement wave of the Peace River Region of Alberta.

It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the

resource is in the public interest.

ATTACHMENT 'A'

The Searle Grain Company Grain Elevator Site Complex is comprised of a

single elevator structure built by the Searle Grain Company in 1932, with

an office and small fuel shed. It is an early example of the Prairie

Vernacular industrial style of railroad structure built to a "standard

tall" plan with a grain storage and handling capacity of 44,000 bushels.

The structure is an excellent example of crib construction and retains a

high degree of integrity with respect to its original design elements,

machinery, and material. It is the oldest known extant example of an

elevator constructed by the Searle Grain Company in Alberta.

The United Grain Growers-Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Elevator Site Complex is

comprised of a single elevator constructed by the United Grain Growers in

1920 that was twinned when the Alberta Wheat Pool constructed a single

elevator adjacent to it in 1940. The twinned elevators are accompanied by

an office building and power-house. Both elevator structures are very good

examples of the Prairie Vernancular style and were built to a standard

square plan designed by the United Grain Growers in 1917. They retain a

high degree of original integrity with some alterations made to accommodate

the twinning in 1940. The site complex is a very good example of a twinned

elevator complex that shows the materials and mechanical systems used

within a two-decade period. The United Grain Growers component is the

oldest known extant example of an elevator constructed by the United Grain

Growers in Alberta.

The historical significance of the grain elevator complexes at Rowley lies

in their structural representation of the major economy of Alberta for much

of the 20th Century, the growth and export of grain.

Government Act, the Summer Village of Silver Sands will offer for sale, by

public auction, in the Municipal Office, 4812 - 51 Street, Onoway, Alberta

on Monday, September 22, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. the following lands:
