Act to proclaim Ethnic Media and Community Media Appreciation Week

Preamble

Ontario

is home to millions of residents who speak, read or understand languages in

addition to Canada’s official languages. Ethnic media outlets, including print,

radio, television and digital publications that operate in languages other than

Ontario’s linguistic and cultural diversity. These outlets help ensure that

Ontarians from diverse backgrounds remain informed about public affairs, public

services and community issues in languages they understand.

Similarly,

community media outlets play a vital role in Ontario’s communities. These

outlets provide coverage of local issues, civic institutions and neighbourhood

events, helping residents remain informed, engaged and connected to the

communities in which they live.

Together,

ethnic media and community media outlets contribute to a vibrant and diverse

media landscape across the province. By reporting on issues that matter to

specific communities and neighbourhoods, these publications strengthen civic

awareness, encourage participation in public life and provide a bridge between

individuals, cultures and institutions across Ontario.

Furthermore,

ethnic media publications help make information about Ontario accessible

abroad, particularly in countries where languages other than Canada’s official

languages are spoken.

proclaiming Ethnic Media and Community Media Appreciation Week, the Province of

Ontario recognizes the enduring importance of both ethnic media and community

media outlets in supporting informed, engaged and connected communities across

the province in a changing news landscape.

Therefore,

His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of

the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Media and Community Media Appreciation Week

The week

beginning on May 1 in each year is proclaimed as Ethnic Media and Community

Media Appreciation Week.

Commencement

This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

short title of this Act is the Ethnic Media and

Community Media Appreciation Week Act, 2026 .
