Brain Tumor Awareness Month

WHEREAS, An estimated 1,000,000 Americans, of all ages, races, ethnicities, and genders, are currently living with a primary brain tumor; and

WHEREAS, Malignant brain tumors are among the deadliest forms of cancer, with just a percent five-year relative survival rate, and can induce substantial changes in lifestyle and well-being for patients as well as their loved ones; and

WHEREAS, For the most malignant type of brain tumor, glioblastoma, the five-year relative survival rate is only 6.8 percent and median survival is only eight months; and

WHEREAS, Los Angeles is home to one of the leading brain tumor centers in the world; and

WHEREAS, Increased public awareness of brain tumors through advocacy and support for vital research, as well as education about the impact brain tumors have on the lives of patients and their families, are critical to finding a cure;

now, therefore,

be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly declares the month of May as Brain Tumor Awareness Month; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
