An act relating to panic alarms in public schools; 2 providing a

short title; creating s. 1013.373, F.S.; 3 defining terms; requiring each public school building on the campus of a public elementary school, middle school, or high school to be equipped with at least one panic alarm; providing panic alarm requirements; 7 providing an effective date. 8

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 10

Section 1. This act may be cited as “Alyssa’s Law.” 12

Section 1013.373, Florida Statutes, is created to read: 14 1013.373 Panic alarms in public schools.— 15

(1) As used in this section, the term: 16

(a) “Panic alarm” means a silent security system signal generated by the manual activation of a device or an alternative mechanism intended to communicate a life-threatening or emergency situation that requires a response from law enforcement. 21

(b) “Public school building” includes all buildings on a public elementary, middle, or high school campus where instruction takes place or where students are present during the school day. 25

(2) Each public school building must be equipped with at least one panic alarm for use in a school security emergency, 27 including, but not limited to, a non-fire evacuation, lockdown, 28 or active shooter situation. Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2020. 34
