Resource Committee — Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, the thing that I would say that would introduce you to my department best would be, that it is very diverse, as you can tell from the list of officials that I have with me, and the kind of areas that they represent. Our department deals with the tourism industry as a piece of the economic development of this Province; but, in addition to that, it also deals with our culture, with our heritage. It looks at preserving our culture. It looks at more than even preserving our culture, also cultivating our contemporary arts. When you look at our heritage from the natural heritage perspective, we are responsible for managing wildlife, inland fish resources. We also have responsibility for recreation, sport, and all of the issues associated with trying to promote active living in the Province. When you stop and think about it, we cover everything from parks to historic sites, Arts and Culture Centres, moose, fish, recreation centres, swimming pools and so on and so on, as well as some artifacts that are probably in the order of hundreds of thousands of years old. WITNESS: Three million. MS BETTNEY: Yes, in the order of 3 million artifacts. It is a very diverse, very interesting department. From the tourism perspective, it has been a significant economic generator that affects all parts of our Province, but I would have to say it affects the rural areas of our Province more so even than the urban areas. It has grown steadily over the past decade or so. Now, it represents a $600 million industry, half of which, $300 million of which, is really non-resident tourism. One of the big things that we undertook as a department last year was to do a marketing review to ensure that as we try and use our resources wisely to promote tourism, that we are doing the best job possible. We have completed that study now and are moving into the implementation phase. That is one of the things that is top on our list from the tou2008-03-04—

It is all embedded in those headings. MS JONES: Okay. Today you were talking about the numbers or the percentage of violence against women has not gone down. MS DUNDERDALE: It has not gone down, no. MS JONES: How many years has the campaign been ongoing now? MS DUNDERDALE: Which campaign? MS JONES: The Violence Prevention Initiative campaign. MS DUNDERDALE: We are coming into our sixth year now fifth year. MS JONES: Okay, five years. Has there been any review of the program or MS DUNDERDALE: There will be. MS JONES: - the initiatives to see if it is working or not working, or maybe has no impact on the fact that the stats have not gone down. I am not saying it is not effective, I am just wondering if there has been any evaluation of it. MS DUNDERDALE: There will be now. This is a six-year initiative, and so the whole evaluation will begin next year. MS JONES: Can you provide us with the numbers for the last five years the statistics? MS DUNDERDALE: On violence? MS JONES: Yes. MS DUNDERDALE: Absolutely. MS JONES: Okay. One of the questions that come up often from the women's centres - that, of course, you guys would fund and do all kinds of work - is with regard to affordable housing. Is this something that the Women's Policy Office has looked at in terms of what is an acceptable strategy to try to approach affordable housing for women in the Province, especially women who live in poverty and violent situations that they need housing on an emergency basis and so on? MS DUNDERDALE: Absolutely. The Women's Policy Office is engaged with the women's centres, first of all. In terms of relaying that information back, not only to me, as minister, we work then particularly with the Department of Transportation and Works who is responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing. Social Services Committee — Department of Education within the Social Services sector. I am Perry Trimper, I'm the MHA for Lake Melville, and I've been chairing all the departments that fall within this grouping of our government departments. This morning we are being broadcast and I would remind all members participating, especially for those who may be new to sitting on the floor, to identify yourself. What we're asking folks to do is to raise your hand, identify who you are and Broadcast will find you, if you've been asked to answer a question. Each time when you respond, please just say your name. As we get into it, I find the formalities tend to disintegrate as we go back and forth, and that's fine, but just give the Broadcast folks a few seconds. So we'll start with 15 minutes to the minister and then 15 minutes for the Opposition, the main Opposition critic, to have a few words, then we'll be calling the headings. We'll go through each of them in sequence and we'll be voting on them as we go. At about an hour and a half, or halfway through, we'll take a 15-minute break to give everybody a chance to stretch. If you have any other occasion to want to get up and leave your chair, we'd ask you to please wear a mask, and that's fine, please proceed.
